largest tire size for stock sidekick?
« on: May 03, 2005, 04:06:11 PM »

I will need new tires before I can work on a lift kit.  I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the largest tire I could use without a lift kit?  It is a 95 4-door sidekick.  the door sticker says 205 75 15 is what is stock, but it has nicer wheels, and 215 75 15 on it now.
The more I drive this thing, the more I like it.  I can't wait to get into the mountains.  It is very nice in the snow.  I am glad this group is here to get answers. Thanks,
Jeff

Well to answer your question.

My 97 4dr has 235x75 tires on 15x7 wheels.
The back tires rub alittle bit on the bumps (maybe a little narrower wheel would help)
The front left tire rubs the front bumper on full right lock while backing up only.
Go figure ;D

Heres a pic of my Tracker, Back when it was stock, with 225x75 tires on 15x7 rims.

here's my truck before lift with 235/75/15 on 15 x 7 wheels. the back tire would rub just on the inside of the fender well but not enough to damage the tire

It depends on your distaste for body "MODS" and/or rubbing noise.  I fit a set of 29 x 10.5" swamper sx's on cheapo 15x7" rims without any lift.

I had to bend the upper lip of my rear wheel wells up flat against the inside of the wheelwell and I still hav rubbing on the outside wall of the tire at full tuck.  Be sure the lip is FLAT agains the wheel well or the tread could catch it and get cut (Mine did).

On the plastic front bumper panel you'll want to trim about 2" off the lower lip to prevent horrible rubbing noises while backing up at full lock.  I'd just pull the whole ugly bumper cover off if I were to do it again.   Also on the back of the front wheel wells you'll find a sheetmetal lip that a plasic cover attaches too that sticks out toward the tire.  it will hit at full lock when the tire tucks.  hammer it flat toward the plastic piece and tuck the plasic cover behind it.  you'll still rub at full tuck and lock but you won't slice yer tires.

A set of 1" lift spacers would probably take care of all the remaining rubbing  if it bugs you but mine worked fine as it was....until I wrecked my tracker :'(

I used to have 225/75/15s on 15x8s for the longest time, I have always heard that a 235/75/15 would fit fine if you didn't mind a little rubbing wheel the wheel was turned and the suspension depressed all the way.

I run 235X75 15.  Lemans ATs on the standard nice alloy wheels and they dont rub except a very little bit on full right hand lock, and then only a very little.  Same on backing but a bit more rubbing.  No mods on the truck
(2dr model)

It is important to know the actual diameter of the tires rather than just the numbers.  Also the width and type of tread.  I have found differences up to 2 inches between brands and models.  Mine measure 28.5 in diameter, with about 7.75 width in tread, AT tread, not too aggressive in the shoulders.

I added 2" of body lift and I can see I could easily go to 30 or maybe 31 diameter.  I will prbably go to 30" with a wider more aggresive tread tire when I wear these down.

By the way my alloy 5.5 width rims hold the tires perfectly and I have put them through some moderate to severe stresses off road, in soft sand and mud but, not on rocks.

Then there is all the issues about back spacing on the rims that affects all of the other dimensions.

When I put on 235/75 BFG ATs on 15X7 rims with 3.76" bs they rubbed pretty much everywhere on the front... even after trimming off the lower part of the bumper skin they would still rub the bumper...2.5" of lift cured that right away ;)
