Auxiliary fuel tank addition ... behind front seats
« on: September 22, 2008, 02:29:51 PM »
I am currently working on fabricating a rear sliding glass window in my Tracker to turn it into a mini-mini-4x4 truck. While doing this I've decided to check into removing the stock fuel tank and installing a new one between the back of the front seats and the new window fab. I was considering installing a 13 gallon Moeller marine tank (#032513 32L x 10.2W x 10.2H). I was wondering if anyone has completed a project like this? If yes, what brand tank did you use?

So you are going to put a tank in the cab with you?
Here are a few questions........
Why?
What is wrong with leaving the stock tank in place?
How legal is it to have a tank inside the cab?

I knew a guy that kept a 200 gallon or so fuel tank inside his station wagon. True story. Then the gas station he was an assistant manager at fired him when they figured out that all the drive offs weren't really drive offs. :police: :police:

With the alterations that I have proposed, placing the fuel tank in the cab is one option that I'm thinking of doing simply because removing it from under the rear of the vehicle offers so much better hill/rock climbing clearance. I would simply place the tank where the back seat is but I want that space to become my mini-truck bed. Of course, I would convert the tank to accept a filler tube, cut the filler tube mount with lid from a salvaged Sidekick, relocate it about elbow high on the Tracker behind the passenger's seat, and vent it to the outside. There should be no law against this due to the fact the tank is vented to the outside. Thank you for you concern.

I had a 54 Chevy pickup 3100 series.  The tank is behind the seaton those in the cab.  Two real bummers.

1) You get tierd of hearing from your friends"Why does is smell like gas in here?".
2) You get to hear it sloshing more then you would think.

I was reminded many times by my Dad that there was a reason why they moved them out of the cabs for saftey.

I just got done putting a fuel cell in my tracker. It wasn't terrible. I kinda suspected my pump was going out, so I decided to replace the whole tank. It also gives me some future possibilities.

The install just required some fabbing. And since the factory has the fuel pump installed in the tank, I ran an external pump. Also most fuel cells have a breather valve, which can be tied into the evap system and vented away from the cab. --FYI-- I bought the high pressure pump from summit. And had to have some fuel lines/hoses made to adapt to the AN fittings.

I haven't noticed any gas smells unless you are careless when you fill it up.
Difficult takes a day. Impossible takes a week.

Beautiful  Heiney.5  ........ Just beautiful. I wonder if there are any narrow fuel cells out there to fit my application?

If you know somebody at a local machine shop they can probably make you a custom gas tank.  My brother had one made up for the kicker on his boat that would fit back and out of the way.
