brake idiot light came on
« on: September 24, 2007, 10:55:57 AM »
The brake light on the dash came on.  I checked the wiring to the e-brake & that's not the problem.  My master cylinder is full, and the brakes feel fine. Front pads are almost new & rear shoes are in good shape.  I'd rather correct the problem than pull the bulb.  Any ideas?

When is it coming on? All the time? When you're breaking?

This was covered in another thread.

it's on all the time.  I tried searching, but couldn't find a thread on it.  Did you by any chance find the link?

Do you have RWAL? ... perhaps the connection to the diff is bad/broken.

Here's the link, but as Ross says here, it may be the float swtich in the reservoir, and there's nothng wrong with your brakes:

OK.... I'm still confused.  The brake light on the dash is still on.  I unplugged the master cylinder wire, it was still on.  I put a jumper wire between the 2 contacts on the plug, and still the light is on.  I proceeded to do the same with the proportioning valve, e-brake, and the ABS ( which was a little trickier ) and still the light never shut off.  Is there anywhere else on the vehicle that triggers the brake dash light to come on?  Brakes are working fine, but I don't want to remove the bulb, & want whoever drives my truck to know to release the e-brake before drivig off. ( I habitually use my e-brake )

Most of the time you need to use a specific resistance across the sensors instead of just a jumper wire.  If you check the manual it will tell you what resistance to expect on the switch to test and see if it is bad.

Just hit the switch with an ohm meter (multi meter) and you should be able to tell if the switch is the problem or not.

Do you have RWAL? ...

So, do ya? ... if so, there is a procedure for getting a code from the RWAL controller.

Does RAWL stand for rear wheel anti lock brakes?  If so, yes I do.  Can you tell me how to find out the code from the rawl controller?  Where is the connection that I should check to see if it is bad or broken?  I really don't know much about it.

here's links to some pages I scanned from the FSM outlining how to get a code from the RWAL controller.

If you get the code, LMK what it is and I can lookup the specidfic diag page too.

One more thing to note ...

1) When you switch the key to on, the light should come on ...
2) when the car is started, the light should go off ...
3) if the RWAL controller sense a problem it will illuminate it soon after (1-2 minutes or so).

If yours isn't behaving this way, then it's not a RWAL sensed issue.

If it doesn't go off after starting, then it's something regarding ...
the e-brake switch/wiring, or
the MC level indicator/wiring, or
the stop light switch/wiring

In the " If it aint broke, dont fix it" category, I thought I'd try something.  I Disconnected the battery for a while & when I got back to connecting it up again, the brake light went out.  I didn't bother checking for codes, as they were probably wiped clean from the battery disconnect.  The light comes on, but turns off a few seconds after the car is running.  If it happens again, I'll look to see what code it's throwing.  Thanks SnoFalls for the help ;D
