35's on a Samurai?
« on: April 03, 2005, 05:50:48 PM »
I have a 87 samurai with a rro jeep eater spoa kit and want to run 35's but have been told that the stock axles won't hold up to the beating. What axles should I run? I thought about toyota mini truck axles, but the rear axle has a centered housing. Bear with me, I'm new to the whole samurai scene and this forum. I bought 5.38 gear sets and lockers for the samurai axles, but i can still return them, but the thirty days is running short, so I need to fiqure out what my options are. Oh I'm running the stock 1.3, tranny and t case. Thanks in advance, Pete ???

It depends on how hard you drive your rig and much air you let out of the tire(making it smaller)when you drive off road, I'v seen guys break all of the rules but they are pertty good drivers also.
1987,1988,1988,1990 samurai's,  1953 m38a1,  1996 x-90,blue.1996 x-90 red.1994 2 door tracker.   only Dead Fish go with the flow.                No Hairy Nosed Wombats were ran over on the trail today.       My ZUK is Xenophobic.

Have you checked for clearance with the larger tyres. Sammis usually need the front axle moving forward to clear the footwells if running 33" tyres and above. I'm
not familiar with the RRO kit though.

What kind of wheelin do you do? I would recomend upgrading tha axels. Toyota's are a good choice as they almost bolt in. You can get a offset housing from http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/. I would recomend a transfer case gear reduction though.

my brothers truck the Real Red Sammi runs 35's on stock axles with the 5.38's and a locker in the rear he hasn't broken anything yet. it really does depend on how you wheel and what 35" tyre you'll be running. He runs Dunlop Mud Rovers which are far lighter then say a Bogger.
I'd run the stock axles and see what happens like I said he hasn't broken anything yet and he's not kind to the skinny pedal(he's got a 1.6 as well) ;D

You can run the Stock minitruck axles with the center section.  You just have to get the front CV type driveshaft and put it in the rear.  The front Axle you have to do something about the Spring Perch width. I am interested in Sky's offset axle, but it is wider than the stock mini truck axle?  so I don't know what I want there.

Another option are the FJ axles.  They are heavier and wider than the Mini Truck axles, but they are offset just like the sammy axles.

Here is mine during the build up.  Mini Truck Axles.

I do have some vibration (35-40mph range), but I don't use it as a daily driver either.
