axel & transmission breathers for wading

Can I buy a kit? should I try and make my own? or buy and modify a land rover kit?

Whilst I don't have a snorkel and don't intend to go too deep into liquid mud soup, better safe than sorry, and the recent posts re water in the diffs/transmissions have got me thinking.

Well, with my tracker, I have all the diffs, tranny and t-case breathers mounted high up from the factory. All into at least the top of the engine bay.

the rear is fiine, the front diff, tranny and tcase I just put a splitter on, ran it into the interior, up to the dashboard.  If water gets above your front bumper, then you'll suck water into your intake

I ran the breathers up to the firewall the first time, but it still got water in it

As you don't have a snorkel I would just extent them by buying some longer rubber hose and routing them up to the highest point in the engine bay.

At the rear of your engine block theres a splitter where the T/case and G/box hose's join so thats easy to extend and the front diff just replace the whole hose straight off the diff.

Sorry to but in, but on a samurai with the stupid little capped breathers, do they thread out of the axle, or do you just have to hook a hose onto the nipple?

many thanks all, will simply buy some tubing & link together & up the firewall - sounds even easier than I guessed.

I may get a cheap basic Land Rover kit to supply the tubing and joints, and go from there - a real advantage here in the UK that Land Rover kit is so cheap, and basic enough to be cobbled about with ;)

all you need is 2 feet of fuelhose and a bit steel to join them together.  

as on the sammie, I'm sure you can thread something in if you take the cap off, or just thread the whole old thing out.

On new quads they have accordian stlye breathersfor their diffs.  They extend and contract when they need to.  They work great and are closed off to the enviroment.  I will be running two on each of my new axles, because they are small, but I've seen guys run just one with no problems.
