what is the best grade gear  oil  to use in a 4.16 transfer case?

Just the standard gear oil, 80w-90.

75-90 synthetic. i know my kick cant run 80-90 once it starts getting cold. had it happen in alberta where it was so thick in neutral it would stall the engine. but thats -20 -30 out...

Shouldn't that be "yellow" metal safe?

Some GL-5 oils use sulphur as an EP (extreme pressure) additive, and the sulphur can attack brass & bronze, which are yellow in color, hence the term.

You guys sure seem to be splitting hairs.   ;)

Just grab the gear oil from Wally World or your local autoparts store.  It will work fine and has been run in a 4:1 t-case of mine for 10+ years. :P

If the t/case is from a first gen trackick you can run what you want, if it's second gen it does make a difference - now - do you want to be the one wlaking into Autozone and asking for a "white metal safe" GL5?

If I'm right the Samurai t/case has no synchros, so you'd be safe with a GL5 there too.
