my manual locking hub fell off... What's prolly screwed now?
« on: November 17, 2009, 07:48:50 AM »
what do you guys think I could have damaged.  It may have broken off not fallen off, but I don't know.  My car started makeing tons of squeally and scratching noises, pulling left, and causing it to act like I was on the front left brake.  So what did my car do to break off my hub?  Or did my hub just get loose and break off and if do what damage did that cause by driving a car with out a hub for like 3 minutes at 25 mph.

my thoughts are maybe a wheel bearing  might be bad. maybe my cv joints just screwed up weard.  I found my hub and it looks fine but on bolt broke out of the side.

also if I need new hubs what ones should I get?

alot of questions here but I can't drive my car so any help would be great.
thank you guys

Where you wheeling? or just normal driving? I would start with the inspection of the CV shafts and inspect the bearing.  The other side should be fine, so I wouldnt worry about that.  If that hub is working put it back on and see if it will engage 4wheel, and work proper.  Where the bolts not tightened? I cant imagine a reason for it to come off otherwise.

normal driveing, and I don't know why all the bolts apparently fell out but one, and the last one broke out the side of the hub. and I'll try to put it on and let you know how it is and if it fixes the problem. thanks for the advice.

Could be your wheel bearing went out snd now other things are rubbing.  Either way sounds like trouble.

Best of luck man.

Ya, wheel bearing. The hub doesn't do anything unless it's locked in, and even then
it just rotates. If you had noise, and the hub fell off, the bolts were loose and you
probably got dirt and or water into the bearings, causing them to fail.

Was it the base bolts "cone bolts" or the little ones that hold the hub cover on?

I think base bolts the ones the hold the whole hub to the rotor.  The hub only fell off like 200 yards from my house.  I think what happen not sure but I think my brake caliper seized and this caused the vibrations and the car pulling toward that wheel, or a bearing broke and just seized real quick I need to jack the car up i get a chance.  That caused the bolts to loosen and here i am.

I felt the rotor through the wholes of the rim and it felt wavy but I should know once i get it jacked up and the wheel off.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Yeah, thats what can happen.  Did it get your brakes too or did you get lucky?  Your lucky already though since it didn't give way on the highway.

yeah i know very lucky. they got a little hurt but i think that side will just wear faster than the other but i took it real slow so it wasn't that big of a deal.
