pre-running a samurai?
« on: March 30, 2004, 12:23:57 PM »
Hello....
I'am planning on buying a Sami from my neighbor to use as a "pre-run vehicle" in the 04 Baja 1000......his Sami is COMPLETELY stock.

Are Samis tough?(I have never driven one or seen one in "action")

What type of mods(suspension & "driveline",I'll worry about the motor later) would YOU recommend for "pre-run"/trail exploring?(I don't want a "rock crawler", I do, but, not if it means sh!tty handling at speeds)He told me to drive it stock with those tiny tires!(for reliability reasons, and the "headache factor" of figuring all this "suspension sh!t" out

I'am new to the Samurai, and don't know much about them(or other trucks/suspension vocab. etc.) so, any advice will help........

Anyone try the "5inch Combo lift "  from Calmini?(how is it?

Thanks

the calmini lifts are nice..very well thought out

if u do any lift to the sami right u will not have bad handaling at speed...so dont wory about that end

the samis are really durable little buggers u dont really have to worry about much...cept getting blown off the road (jk)

others will be a ton more help than i am

welcome to the board =)

I don't think a samurai is a good platform for prerunning. The wheelbase is too short for some of the woopty-doos and launches/jumps, the axles aren't strong enough to handle the jumps and such - and while the 1.3 is peppy in such a small vehicle, it's not a pre-runner.

As bad as it is to say this on a samurai board - I think you should look for another platform.

Ahemm ..... This is a Suzuki Board  :D

you want coils for the rough stuff, Sammy
or SideKick, you can get coils for a sammy
or lift the kick, and go with it.

How fast do you pre-run the coarse ???

I've seen video, it's (the desert) not kind
to man nor machine.

I worked on a buddy's  desert pit crew a few years ago. The prerunner rig for an average budget team also doubles as a support truck for the race vehicle if needed (tires etc). There isn't much room in a Samurai. Also, we would take two or three guys from the crew to check out the route (it gets boring at the base camp). Again more problems.

Performance wise, the Samurai is sturdy. Check out the Petroworks catalog. They sponsored a Samurai that finished the 1000. The pictures of the rig look like it has a very small lift with maybe 29 inch tires.

If I were looking for a good prerunner though, I would want something with a longer wheelbase, a decent size storage capacity and COLD, no SUPER COLD (did I say cold) air conditioning. 8)

Sammys are to short & to narrow for high speed and ido mean high speed. I have owned two pree runners and raced them, and i can say that a sammy could run but not WFO if you know what i mean, im talking  80 to 100 plus over very rugh ground . But hey id like to see it :o

I know I can't go anywhere near 60mph(offroad)......I was planning on anywhere from 10(rough, woopy,rutted)-to-45/50(on a wide dirt road)....I'am not worried about the space(buddy driving my Tacoma).....I mostly want a 4x4 to tag along to winch out/tow the Tacoma when sunk in silt, or a wash etc.

I only need to pre-run to "track" the course on my GPS, not to see how fast I can run the course........

Anyone know the team(name or website or contact info.) that finished the 1000 in the Sami?

Here is the info on the Petroworks vehicles that I can read from the catalog. The first vehicle is Javier Reyes' Sami that completed both the Baja 1000 and 2000. I can't make out the main team sponsor on the side of the Sami. The second Sami in the Catalog is listed as "the first Samurai to finish the Kartek 400." The main sponsor appears to be "Tut Tech Racing." Call Petroworks for more info or a copy of the catalog. :)

I know you were asking about a Sammy, but I can't find any pictures of the rally ones that I saw...maybe you can find a cheaper track/kick.
