2nd gen. tracker suspension lift.
« on: April 20, 2009, 07:57:59 PM »
I recently bought a 2000 Chevy Tracker 4 door, took it out trail riding for the first time this past weekend. Damn do these things sit low for a 4x4. I've read over about every suspension thread I could find on here but mostly they are about gen.1 Trackers. I'm not wanting to do a body lift, and 29" tires from how the Tracker will spend its time on road and off road would work well. Why is 1 1/8"  the biggest coil spacer for gen2 or is it? I noticed the calmini has tie rod extensions with their 2.5", and The OME doesn't cause of the factory arm or they dont sell it seperately, this maybe why its reduced on the generation 2 from a 2 1/2" kit to a 2" kit. If I go with the OME spacers, springs and rear shocks, will the factory struts work on the front Since  they dont list the struts as custom length? Any suggestions on springs and shocks from mustangs or what not to get me close to what im after would be greatly appreciated.

those rocky road spacers are not a good idea, not recommended, they will provide approx 1&1/8inches of lift up front and less in the rear..  there's a guy on here that sells coil spacers for the 2nd gens, check the 2nd gen forum off the main forum page and you'll find the thread.  people seem happy with his stuff.  for the rear some guys use crown vic shocks, i use mustang, i've busted a crown vic shock into 2 parts, my mustang shocks are now dead also.. they see some good abuse..  the mustang is a bit longer but maybe not as nice riding, however just bolts right up with zero issue, i'm looking to install some yota 4runner rear shocks now.  for the front you can get strut spacers but there are issues with the reinstall of the strut brace afterwards, don't run your rig without it.  there are strut extensions which people seem to frown upon, i've run them for a couple yrs now and they are solid if installed right however i seem to go through strut mounts and i'm thinking this may be due to the extension being 70mm long and on up travel when fully compressing the strut when bouncing it's pushing up too much and stressing the mount.. next is the ome strut, expensive but people seem to like them however a lot of guy seem to break them..

I talked to Jeff and found out he has a bigger spacer available than the 1 1/8" ima go with his  1.5" setup. I was thinking of changing rear coil springs, but now im not so sure if there isn't any major fault in this that anyone knows of. After reading some of the threads about Rocky Roads Ome shocks, seems to be quite a few blowing out on ppl. I need to ask if anyone knows of a good shock  they would recommend thats around 2 inches longer than a factory rear one, or how does the Rocky Road engineered rear shocks perform and last.

On a side note. Anyone know any links to pushbars, brushgaurds, and/or winchbumper for the gen 2 trackers.

When people are blowing out the shocks, it is the front strut and not the year.  Usually due to the strut being able to over-extend when rallying it on back roads.

For the rear, if you need extra length the Crown Vick and Mustang mentioned by bzzr2 are the cheap/easy way to go.  For me the valving is a little heavy, but your a bit heavier then my 96 2-Door so they may be a bit softer.  :)

I tried some new shocks, and they rode so rough, I had to take them off. I made some shock spacers out of 2" square tubing, and mounted it to the top of the stock shock, and bolted the tubing to the shock mount on the frame. Works great, and got the factory ride back.

That is a neat way to do it.  I plan on moving the lower shock mount up an inch to get it off of the bottom of the axle.

mig a couple of mounts on top of the axle, interesting idea. Less things hanging down the better is it not. :P

We did the same thing to the back of BRD HNTR's to get the shock's up, but I don't need to go quite as high as he did.  I only want an extra inch, so I'll probably run mine to the bottom of the axle.
