2002 chevy Tracker purchase
« on: January 20, 2019, 08:32:43 AM »
Am dealing on a 2002 Chevy Tracker, 2.0L 4, completely stock, 250,000km on odo. looks very clean, no rust, everything working.
Owner states it use's about a litre between changes and it has a torn lower boot on front CV shaft.
Are there any known issues with this model and yr. I should be looking out for??

thanks in advance for any tips!

I bought a 2002 4dr yesterday! 160K miles which may be close to your km reading. Both sound normal for a high mileage vehicle.
You can expect, as I can expect, some maintenance to be needed. Everything works on mine too but it needs shocks & struts.
I hope to do a small lift & slightly oversized tires.
Good luck should you buy the one you are looking at.

Try to hear it start up "from cold" - listen for timing chain rattle (any rattle from the front of the engine) - a second or two is acceptable, any longer than that is an indication of poor maintenance, and potential problems down the road.  Check the front suspension cross member for corrosion - some vehicles did not have enough protection and the cross member rotted from the inside out.

Thanks,
The using oil concerns me.  Is this a norm in this engine at this mileage?

A liter between changes doesn't mean much to me - what's the oil change interval?   5000 kms?  I'd say that's not excessive for an engine with 250,000 kms on it.

I don’t think a liter between changes would even be enough to get a warranty repair on a new car.  Once you get into it, you might find a couple of small oil weeps and seeps that could be responsible for most of that useage.

I predict this will be your favorite car to date.  I love mine, they just work and they get it done with minimal breakage and maximum comfort for the cost.

Nice BMCCOY. Looks like a deluxe version compared to my base model!
