Questions abt 1.3 to 1.6 engine, i know nothing.
« on: March 23, 2005, 06:33:23 AM »
I've got an 88 carbed 1.3 and i've found a 1995 1.6 16valve fuel injected tracker engine.  What i'm wondering is how hard this will be to swap and what kinda problems am i gonna have to deal with going from a carb to injected.  Or any other things i may need to be aware of.
I'm not much of a mechanic yet , but i know i want to have some more power.
Thanks for all the help,

A 1.6 8-valve would be an easier swap. Using an adapter plate it would be essentially bolt in and you could still maintain a carb. Switching to the EFI is going to be harder you have a lot more sensors to deal with and if my memory serves me correctly you will have pull you wiring harness and send it out with the 1.6's wiring harness to have them joined unless you feel up to the task of rewiring it yourself. Don't let this dissuade if you want to do this. I would try to find someone out there who has already done this and pick there brain. There is no substitute for experience. Best of Luck.  :)

  • If it's a 4-wheel drive it should be off-road

We will be doing this same swap when we find a donor vehicle so I've been getting as much information I can off the internet and there are some good writeups about it. Just do a google search and start reading.
I would stick with the fuel injection just because when you are wheeling in the mountains you don't have to worry about the carb flooding.  (just my .02)

I've read at one place that the sami needs to be lifted, and at another that it doesn't have to be.  Mine is bone stock.  Am I gonna have another problem here???  The budget is tight and lifting probably isn't gonna fit in.

Thanks,

Only thing I have heard is you have to put in a 1" body lift but not all people have had to do it so it must depend on maybe the motor or something. You can always cut a hole in the hood if it rubs. ;D

We're just finishing this swap in the LawDog (88 sami carbed to a 96 16v) and believe me there's more to this than meets the eye :o the adapter plate and motor mount are the easy part, the rest is a royal pain >:( I chose to tackle the wiring myself :-/ and if it wasn't for the fact that I worked at a GM dealership and have acsess to all the schematics for the 1.6 it would have been alot worse.

For this swap you will need; the 16v, the complete harness and computer from the kick, the fuel tank(or an external high pressure fuel pump), a 1.3-1.6 adapter plate and motor mounts, and the vehicle needs to be lifted for oil pan clearence I don't know how much (the LawDog was already SPOA). Oh yeah and when your all done the hood won't close(we're making a cowl hood for it right now).

Please don't let this discurage you from doing it the power gains are amazing :o we just fired it up monday and his 33's go up in flames :P ;D ;D

lots of power! ;D by the way if you find you need anything I've got a '95 with a 16v that I'm putting a top secret engine in and have the harness, computer, 16v and other doodads you may need. let me know

Thanks for all the info guys.  I'm not sure it the budget is ready for all this yet.  I'm not crazy about the body lift and I don't know of anyone local that could help me out with the wiring.
If I went with the 8v, would i be losing very much power from the different FI of the 16v?
Right now, I have a hard time doing 55 with this motor, how much more kick would I get?
I can't decide if I want to go ahead and do it or not.   ???  I'd prefer not to lift the sami very high and I don't think I have the funds to do both right now anyways.  I do know that I can't pop the clutch and spin the tires like i'd like in the mud.  I guess i'll debate some more.
The engine i had lined out was a 95 track with 100,000 miles.  It was gonna cost 600.  Is that a good price??

Again thanks for all the info and any other input would be apperciated.

So this part is easy fixed, just buy the wire harness already made up.

This is good news, now I can tell the wife we have to lift the Sami first before the motor gets put in.

Not a good thing to know, remember our conversion is going to be for our 15 year old son.

Now I'm excited to help him get this little vehicle going. Thanks for the information because we were going to paint the hood before hand but now we better wait until we do the engine swap so we will know how much to cut up the hood. What part of the hood is in the way???? Hopefully it's in the middle so we can just make the middle of the hood higher!!!!

There is a solution to not doing a body lift. Give Hawk a call the have an oil pan conversion that will allow you bolt in your engine at a stock height. ;D
