Freakin parking brake cable!

Anyone know how to remove the parking brake cable from the backing plate on a Trackick? Without cutting it  :laugh: It's got some kind of spring tab thing that fits around the cable and into the backing plate that I 've tried a bunch of different ways to compress with no luck.
The usual stuff, and 2nd generation Air to liquid intercooled TURBOCHARGER

I've used small flat screwdrivers and/or needle nosed pliers to push down or squeeze the tabs and work the cable out of the backing plate.  Yeah, they are usually a bitch to get out.

Thanks Skyhi, that does look like the only way. I love how the FSM just says " Remove parking brake cable " in step #4 of the procedure. Details, details, its always the details. I just may cut them when the time comes, I'm in the process of gathering parts for a disc brake conversion in the back. I'm tired of cleaning up brake fluid from leaking wheel cylinders. They sure don't seem to like this sandy icy water we have in South Jersey.

I had really good luck using duck billed pliers. they are stronger than needle nose. getting the cables out is still a BITCH!!!  :laugh:

Thanks guys. I finally got them out using the " screw driver " method suggested by Skyhigh. Actually once I got the first tang started the rest came out easily
BTW, for anyone considering doing a rear disc swap on a Traackick: DO IT! I've never experienced my Tracker with real stopping power until now. Damn, what a difference.

Did you have 4 door front disks and calipers on there before the rear disk conversion?

I remember thinking wow what a difference the 4 door brakes made (front only)

Did you do anything to the line pressure? Or just put on rotors and calipers?

Just 4 door rotors and calipers on the front for the first few years. My rear drums were never very effective if they did anything at all. Mostly they just gummed up from sandy mud, and the cylinders would start leaking. I would change out shoes and wheel cylinders at least twice a year. The drums were wasted too, so I just swapped for the disc setup. No changes to anything else, except I have been running a 4 door master cylinder for as long as I've had the 4 door rotors and calipers. Having rear brakes that actually work is probably whats really impressing me I guess, but I just got back from a trip into the forest where the holes were thawing and water was DEEP. No problems at all, and the brakes dried out in just a few feet of application. Very worthwhile and easy mod to do.  ;D
