2001 swift g13b swap
« on: February 20, 2011, 07:23:56 PM »
I found a wrecked 2001 swift with a g13b multi port fuel injected motor and was wondering if anyone has put an OBD2 engine into a 86 samurai.  the swift was also an auto and I didn't know if that would add any more problems to the swap.  Does anyone know if this will work or am I bitting off too much to chew with all the wirring.
any info would be appreciated.
thanks,
Andrew

Of coarse it can be done, and yes you might be biting off more than
you can chew with the wiring, but how else is it going to get done?

If you get all the electrics, it should be an easy enough swap, but there
could be some issues with the auto computer and a manual trans in the
Samurai, and there might be a VCC in the speedo that you need to make
the computer happy.

Pretty much get everything that has a wire attached to the computer just
in case you need it later, actually with a swap like this you want to have the
whole car parked where you are working, 1 so you can remove stuff as needed
and 2 so it's all there if you need it.

I put a turbo setup onto a non turbo Pinto engine, got the computer and all
the hardware from the donor turbo T-bird and installed it all on the new engine,
just sorted through all the wires, anything not needed was culled out and all the
engine connections were used. I think this project would be similar, pull it all and
remove what is not needed, BTW you will need the fuel pump from the Swift
tank and it should be cheep enough if you get the whole thing for a set price

well I got the motor with all the sensors and pigtails, I have a buddy who is a honda freak and has been reading about builds with people using a honda harness and chipped ecu to run things like mazda v6's so we are gonna give it a shot.

From what I could find the g13 blocks themselves are the same, and I shouldn't have too hard a time with mounting but I 'm looking at an interesting problem with the thermostat housing coming out of the rear of the head and running into the firewall.  I didn't know it this was a problem with any other transverse motor swaps and if there is a 90 degree housing that would swap out. Just trying to figure out if there is anything at the pick and pulls I could look for or if I'm gonna have to fab my own stuff.

There also might be a problem with the distributor hitting the firewall, as far as the
water outlet, look into a 16V 1.6 one from a Sidekick, it might just bolt on, and there
is supposed to be a stubby distributor cap that works to clear the firewall, but you
will have to research that one because I can't remember what it was from

If I'm right the 01 Swift is a G13BB engine - with MPI injection & a wasted spark distributorless ignition system - no distributor to foul the firewall.

no distributor to get in the way but the radiator hose comes straight out the back of the head, already have some ideas on how to fix that.

I know some of the guys running the 1.6 tbi have used the in line fuel pumps off of late 80's early 90's ford trucks and couldn't find if there was a specific year/model that I should be on the look out for.

Did you check out a 1.6 16V thermostat housing that I suggested?

If it's from an auto, make sure the crank is the same as the one in your Sam.  I've heard of guys gettin stopped halfway through cause an auto crank wasn't machined out for a pilot bearing.  Just a heads up

Mmmm - unless I'm very much mistaken - none of the Swift cranks take a pilot bearing, not even the 5 speeds - (and I have two) - the pilot bearing sits in a recess in the flywheel.
