I've got a wierd question.  My front axle has 2 tubes coming out of it.  One out the top which I know is the breather tube and one out the bottom. 

What is the bottom tube for???  It goes to a hard line that runs off to someplace in never never land and I can't quite tell where it ends.  If it helps, my truck is a 2000 tracker 2dr 4x4 5spd. 

I thought it might be a vacuum operated front axle disconnect but it goes right into the third member and my axle seems to be constantly locked so I'm guessing thats wrong.

Thats the air line for the front diff. It should go to a pump mounted near the chassis rail. The pump is activated when 4wd is engaged. The axle should be normally disengaged, if you pull the line off you will probably get the Check Engine Light flashing when the tcase is moved to 4x4.

wow, thats a sucky design.  why even bother unlocking the front axle if you do it right at the diff.  I was gonna put manual hubs on but why bother now.  any way to make it permanently locked?
 

Now am I reading this correct??? On the newer Tracker/Vitara the Driveshaft and CV's spin all the time and the only difference in 2wd and 4wd is the air actuated diff locking?

And the t-case locking in and out.  The front is basiclly full time 4wd!

OK, so the tcase unlocks too, so it is just the CV's that spin constantly.

Yep, but you can fit manual hubs if you want. I suspect Eric will be along in a bit with a link to a Zukiworld technical article.

Add your manual hubs and pack away the drive flanges for trail fixes. You could disconnect the front cv's from rotating if you actually break one.
