OME vs. GV springs

Howdy all... I know that swapping the gv coils into a kick has been done by maybe a few of you out there... I hear it gives ya 2" over stock height. What I am wondering is, what is the ride quality and how would the gv springs compare to the OME? Reason why I ask is that I am currently running the OME with spacers and thought it might be better to run a taller spring instead of a coil/spacer combo.....

Any info or feedback (other than use the search feature) would be appreciated!!!

you should check out this link http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=444978 the guy used ome gv front coils and got 3 inches of lift i think.

Hey Jerry, looks like you and I are working twards' the same end. I've been experimenating with coils since I started building this thing. I've finally got the front close to where I want it (Calmini 3" coils with 1" spacer.)  In the back it's a different story. OME coils with 2" spacer and modified mounts in the rear. The problem now is the rear is MUCH harsher over sharp edged bumps than the front. The height is fine,  but the OME spring rate is slightly higher than stock, and with all the extra weight on the front of the rig: winch, winch bumper, skid plates, etc, and a lighter than stock rear, gutted in back, no rear seat, and empty most of the time, the ride is uneven and tends to "hop" over sharp edged bumps. I suppose I could throw a few hundred pounds of extra weight back there, and on trips I do. When loaded it rides much better. But I want to have it both ways. Need adjustable set up. At this point the only way I can get the coils I want is to have them made, Stock rate, or LIGHTER, 140 to 150bs, 3.5" longer. I've already priced them $350!!! That's a lot of money to spend.  I've been doing a lot of research on this and found I can get a good set of COIL OVER ADJUSTABLE shocks for a bunch less than that, with the correct travel and spring length. Just have to figure out how to mount them. I'm working on it. If anyone else knows where there is some kind of spring rate chart that gives sizes and actual numbers, that would be EXCELLENT!!!

Hey Jerry, I just put some GV springs in a friends 2 door kick and he likes the ride. He is also using a 2" spacer but we are going to cut down the spacer to 1". It gave the front about a 3" lift.

Now the question is if I should sell my OME and go with the GV coils. I can get them next to nothing... I am going to swap them and give it a try... If I likey... I selly the OME!!!!

Bentparts,
When you did the mod to the rear, did you space the center mount (V bar to axle housing)? If not your harsh hitting feeling is probably the joint binding up. Put her up on jack stands and see if it's close to it's travel limit. If so a spacer could smooth out your ride.

Hey Zig, yeah I put a spacer in there, did the whole Hagen over rotation of the rear axle. I may need a thicker rear spacer for the center link though. As it sits now with the wheels on the ground, the center link is about level.  As a concequence of the rotation, the coils are angled forward a tad. I'm probably gonna' cut the top mounts right off the frame, and move them back and down a couple of inches, straighten them out and eliminate the spacer altogether.  I think Mike did this once as well, among his many incarnations.

OK cool. You dont want one if those to bind for to long, It really scary getting towed home with nothing but the shocks and outter links holding the rear in place  :o (I'll never do that again)  :P

Yeah, I really think it's just a combination of most of the weight being in the front, and too stiff a coil in the rear. I need some passengers!

Well, I pulled the GV springs today... Going to mount 'em tonight and see if I like them... If so, keep an eye out for a for sale ad for my OMe springs!!!
