This 1987 Suzuki Samurai JX convertible is a two-owner, 4WD example purchased 5 years ago as a father-son project and has been a California truck since 1997. It has a 5-speed manual transmission, a performance header and exhaust added to its 1.3L engine and an upgraded suspension and wheel/tire package. The odometer reads 105,963 miles, but recently quit working. Paint is fading but the Samurai is reported to be reliable on the road. The seller has performed a number of major maintenance items, including a timing belt and new crank and cam seals. He smogs it in California every 2 years.
The SJ-Series was introduced to the U.S. in 1986 in both convertible and hardtop models, and with an optional rear seat. The truck reportedly has its original gray paint, body and running gear and there is minimal rust or corrosion in the body. The black vinyl top has been replaced. Both front and rear bumpers are fitted with trailer-hitch receivers. A chrome push bar with twin off-road lights is fitted in front; chrome rock sliders are below the doors. 15″ steelies are wrapped with Definity Dakota A/T 31 x 10.5 tires. The front tow bar setup shown is included, but can be removed.
A custom-built rollcage has been added over the rear seating area.
Gray vinyl interior is a mix of original and replaced parts with a clean dash and carpet. Door panels have been replaced, but the front buckets are worn on top and the rear seat has some sun-cracking. Rubber mats, a Smittybilt locking center console and storage in the rear door have been added.
The odometer reads 105,963 miles, but the seller says that it stopped working after the fuel tank was last filled in December; he estimates 100 miles ago. The instrument cluster panels are new, as are the Sony CD player and Kenwood speakers. All exterior/interior/instrument lighting reportedly works, as do the gauges, tach, clock, heater/defroster, switches, latches and locks and the windows go up and down as they should. The original clock is included; currently fitted is a digital. The A/C works, but the seller says that it needs a recharge every 2 years or so.
An unmodified 1.3L 4-cylinder engine was rated at 63hp when new, but the seller says that this truck’s has around 12 additional horsepower after adding a Doug Thorley header and Magna-Flow cat/muffler system. During the seller’s 5-year ownership, he replaced the timing belt, crank and cam seals, and the oil pan and valve cover gaskets. The clutch disc, pressure plate and throw-out bearing have been replaced, and the seller says that it has been successfully smogged in California every two years. He had the carburetor rebuilt and has replaced all vacuum lines. Optima Red Top battery and battery disconnect were just installed.
Suspension upgrades include a Calamari SPOA (Spring Over Axle) lift kit, Calamari High Steer kit, brake line extensions and Rancho 9000-series adjustable shocks, as well as the Rancho steering dampener shown above. The seller says that the upgrades “took care of most of the ‘stock Suzuki’ harsh ride.”
The driveshafts have been balanced and the U-joints replaced. The aftermarket header and exhaust system are said to be California-legal. Additional underbody views are shown in the photo gallery.
The front locking hub on the driver’s side is said to be a little stiff when selecting the “Locked” position.

    Oil Change was completed in December 2015 (Approximately 100 miles ago)

    Driven Miles approximately 1500 miles, tow mileage approx. 2000 for a total of 3500 miles
3.) Do you know the name of the factory color? How would you describe the shine and condition of the paint?
    Grey body, black top, grey interior
4.) Do you have? (be specific, if you have them) Owner’s manual, jack, original tools, original key(s), (etc?) Are you including any goodies, such as a shop manual, etc.?

5.) Everything works? All exterior lighting, including headlights, turn signals, parking lights and taillights work as they should? Interior lighting and instrument lighting?
    Everything works, all lights work.

    Everything works but speedometer cable (since December 2015...approx 100miles ago)
7.) What doesn’t work?
    Odometer does not work, speedometer cable not working.
8.) Any instruments added?
    Aftermarket Stereo Installed, digital clock replaced old style clock on dash (still have old style clock)
9.) Does the dash have any cracks in it? Or door panels, etc.?
    No cracks on the dash, door panels (are new) etc.  Seats tops are worn, some cracking of the rear seat due to sun
10.) Any oil or fluid leaks?
    No leaks
11.) Does it have carpets? Mats? Condition? (I can’t tell in the photos.)
    Carpet kit is in good shape.  Rubber floor mats are in the vehicle. 
12.) Would you like to include any statements such as: (mechanically sound/fully sorted/could be driven home anywhere/ready for a cross-country trip/you would have no (qualms/hesitation/etc?) If so, in your own words, please.
    The Samurai runs great.  It is perfect tow vehicle that will take you where you need to go.  Runs very well, does pass smog.

    With addition of  the headers, and exhaust, potential increased horsepower by 20% or from 63hp to 75hp

(From Wikipedia) The SJ-Series was introduced to the United States (Puerto Rico (SJ-410) and Canada earlier) in 1985 for the 1986 model year. It was priced at $6200 and 47,000 were sold in its first year. The Samurai had a 1.3 liter, 63 hp (47 kW), 4-cylinder engine and was available as a convertible or a hardtop, and with or without a rear seat. The Suzuki Samurai became intensely popular within the serious 4WD community for its good off road performance and reliability compared to other 4WDs of the time. This is due to the fact that while very compact and light, it is a real 4WD vehicle equipped with a transfer case, switchable 4WD and low range. Its lightness makes it a very nimble off-roader less prone to sinking in softer ground than heavier types. It is also considered a great beginner off-roader due to its simple design and ease of engine and suspension modifications.
