After burning through yet another 'ultra-bright' headlight, a cheap one from Summit this time, I decided that it was high time to track down how to disable the running lights on my 96 Tracker.  So I grabbed the wiring diagram for the DRL from the Factory Service Manual and started to look over what it would take.

After minutes of research I located the DRL module, it is against the firewall just behind the clutch pedal.  From there I was able to put together that you need to disconnect pin 7, black with a white stripe.  It's next to the empty one, pin 6.  When you turn your key on it is sent power from the ignition circuit.  This turns on the DRL.

And that's it.  You can wire it into a switch so you can disable the lights at well, cut the wire, or just unplug it.  Supposedly the DRL shouldn't burn out you headlights, as it runs at a reduced voltage, but still want the option to have them off.

And this may be illegal in Canada.  I think they require DRL.

or just go 1 click up on your e-brake lever  ;)

or squeeze the ebrake sensor together making it think the brake is on.

why not run a switch off the ebrake sensor? trip it with the switch, then if you ever get pulled over you can switch it back before the cop gives you a ticket (or if an inspection is needed)

Because I really don't want the brake light to be constantly on my dash.  You could also just run a ground switch to the e-brake line coming off of the DRL module and trick it that way.  Once again though, your brake light will be on while driving around.

Drone, I went behind the clutch of my 96 and find 3 wire looms.  To find the black one with white stripes, do you have any other clues?
96 Tracker LSI, 2.5" Pro Comp lift with cooper 30X9.5 STT tires.  A bit of trim and beating to make the front work.

 I know in later models,, 98 and up for sure,, is an ambient light sensor.. a little round button looking thingy, usually at the top of the dash, passenger side, you should be able to unplug it or run a jumper wire between wires, if there are three wires, which i think there are use a test light, one should be hot when the e-brake is on., other should be constant,, and a ground if I'm not mistaken. hope this helps...

The way Drone explained was perfect!  Did not even need to cut a wire, all the spades inserted into the junction can be removed by inserting the point of your circuit tester above the spade releasing the catch then pull the whole spade out.  I chose to put a bit of heat shrink over the spade to keep it from shorting on something, but black tape would work just as well.  This should increase the life of the silverstars tremendously.  Thanks D!
