DATSUN GRAFT
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:07:11 AM »
Hey guys. Ben a while.
Well I have finally decided to pull the trigger on the L20B swap.
Have prepped 2 engines #1 is a fairly stock L20 with a non molested A87 head, SSS, exhaust man. and Hitachi (stock Datsun ) carb. At ruffly 115 to 120 hp .
#2 is Asian market L20B block , flat top pistons, H beam L20 rods, stock crank, A87 head that has been ported cammed (290), heavy springs, Cannon intake, Dellorto 40's x2, SSS exhaust man. 150 ish hp.
I'm not sure that the Dellortos are the best idea for off angle use . We will be running the stockish set up first.
This will be mated to a Datsun drop pan 4speed transmition , using a 260Z 2+2 clutch and flywheel.
I will retain the Zuke transfer case with 4.61 gears.
The engines are boath done. We are starting the swap today.
will post lots of pics once we get started.
God Bless

This sounds like it'll be fun.  How about a bank of modern CV carbs in place of the Delorto's? They would be much better at adjusting and compensating for angle as well as altitude changes. Good carb that Dellorto though, I ran them a couple of times on race bikes. Took a set off a wrecked Cagiva sport bike back in the early 80's and mounted them on a Shell 750 Yamaha dirt tracker. Worked very well  >:D

Just thinking of that hot rod Datsun engine brings back memories of two little cars I had the pleasure to drive. Right after high school I met a guy who had a car built for a sort of rally type running. A  Datsun, first Datsun I had ever seen, Stock or otherwise. This being Detroit in 1974 I thought it was cute but that's about it. Then we swapped vehicles one day, he rode my 750 Triumph rigid framed chopper and I drove his Datsun. Thing was a freakin blast! I spent a day blasting around on dirt roads learning how to slide, revvin' the piss out of that little engine and having a blast.  I think he rode my bike to the beach to pick up chicks.

The second time was in 1979, Ansbach Germany. Got to be friends with some of the locals and eventually met this kid who was like any another young motor head, just happened to be German.  He had built himself a wicked little NSU, tiny car like the Datsun, but with a transverse mounted rear engine. It seemed so weird to me, but what really got my attention was the small but wide go kart like tires and the bank of 4 velocity stacks sticking out of the rear hood, attached to 4 Delorto pumpers and the trickest little engine I'd seen up to that point.  It was a total rush on the tiny country roads there, and would spin the tires and howl when it got on the pipe. I've been hooked on little engines ever since. Not that there's anything wrong with a nice American style V8 fo course  ;D
Now start posting them PICS!

Thought I'd better update this old thread. Seems my build thread has been lost in time......
Ended up building the rig with an L-20B single carb system Using a drop pan 4 speed from an early Datsun 510.
The swap was a cinch .
Motor and tranny mounts and drive line conversion were the meet of the swap.
Runs stock Samurai cooling system...
I'm not going to go in to to much detail here as this is not a build thread....
I will say that this swap is easier than most 16v or 2 liter swaps and is a good alternative to the Suzuki engines.
I have 30,000 trouble free miles on this configuration now and would never consider going back......

Interesting. What kind of mileage do you get out of your setup? Any more pics?

The base engine is an L-20B from the late 70's.
It was used in a plethora of Datsun / Nissan vehicles over the years.
Has the advantage of an iron block, HUGE main bearing ,and chain driven cam.
I run an A-87 close chambered head as it is the best performing head that is readily available to the public.

I mated it to a drop pan 4 speed ( Datsun ) used again in many early 70's rigs.
A robust , and yet compact unit that can be easily serviced while in the rig.

I ended up running a Holly economaster 5150 carb. A clone of a Weber  running holly jets.
Damn thing runs well at all angles ( I generally hate Weber's ) and has proved to be a very reliable carburetor.
I do run a fuel regulator set at 3lbs. Mechanical fuel pump and because I am old school, a single point ignition....
Iron exhaust manifold from a 1972 SSS 1800 ( nice unit ) feeding a 2" exhaust with a Flow Master....

The engine fits as well as the 1300 it replaced.
I simply dropped the stock motor mounts roughly 1.5 - 2" using 1/4" plate.
Fabricated  a trans mount from a 1.5" block of UHMW  and bolted here in.
As the set up I am running drives a 14" direct drive fan the stock Suzuki radiator works fine.
I dropped it 3" to align it with the fan then modified the stock fan shroud for the larger fan blades.

Alignment is everything !!!!!! Before welding the motor mounts and finagling the trans mount you MUST
check that the alignment with the transfer case is spot on. No room for error here......
The mid shaft consists of a single Datsun U joint mated to the rear yoke from the Stock Zuke mid shaft.
Once you have your alignment then weld the motor mounts.............

The trans is a snug fit in the tunnel but just takes a small amount of ballpein adjustment to clear.
The shifter location will be 3" to the rear of stock. A bit of cutting is required here.....

I did end up running an external oil filter adapter for clearance reasons as can be seen in a few of the pics posted.
I recommend a strong set of axles as you will be doubling the HP and torque if the engine is set up right.
I have the luxury of having three transfer cases with three gear ratios all set up on after market T-case mounts.
This allowed for some experimentation with final drive.
With 31"x10.50 BFG MT's I now run the stock geared T-case.... No issues, crawls well , climbs like a goat , goes like a scalded cat.....
With 33's I run the 4.16:1 . Same result listed above.
I have adapted the tracker power steering system to this conversion as well with good results. More on that later.

The Power steering conversion was a bit complex.
I unfortunately have not been able to find many pics of the build up , it's been a while....
I used a Trackick  pump and gear box that I acquired from Sewerzuke. Nice guy.
converted the serpentine pulley to a v belt on my lathe using some creative tooling....
The pump mount was made easy due to the many useful mounting bosses on the L-20b engine.
I then adapted the Trackick steering gear to the frame by reverse engineering the wedge mount used by nearly everyone using this system.
The big problem I ran into was the need for a drop pitman of the correct length for my rather highly modified samurai.
I ended up machining one from scratch.
If I can find the pics of the drop pitman I will post them later......
For now I will post a few pics of the mount we built for the L-20b used in a more current build.
It runs a Toyota Steering system but is very similar.
