Lug wrench wheel protector- free
« on: July 03, 2012, 12:57:17 PM »
Had to scrub the other side of wheels and rotate, got tired of scratching the powder so I made this out of a gallon milk jug cap. It fits perfectly onto stock lug wrench, works perfectly on rears but on the front the hubs offset it (have to push/pull them on/off) yet it still saves powder/paint.

I have only one question - if the powder coat is that delicate, what the heck happens - a) under the lug nut and b) when you get out on to the trail?

Not so delicate. As seen in last photo lower right, the other lug has "marring". I could probably minimize/buff out the marring, but some others are worse. Aesthetics for me, not like my whole ride is cherry but I try to make an effort.

As for under lugs, it is chipped/scratched. Taking rims on and off leaves paint chips on threads, overall the powder's holding up good. Quality could have been better. The main seam around rim was not perfectly filled so as to rust a little now- can see some air bubble voids in same pic. Some rust on sharp 90* corners. Bounced tools off rim and no chip- but not sharp edged ones.

Never flipped many rocks onto rims but powder's pretty solid, got to be stronger than paint by far (as long as it's prepped good and done by quality shop).

If wasn't white- I would care less. Just trying to represent with the occasional "nice jeep" comments...
