I hopped up my first 1300 years ago. I bumped the compresion by shaving, decking, and using Turbo Sprint pistons. They only came in sets of three so I had to buy six to use them. (Sprint's a 3 cylinder)
The engine made great power... comparable to a 1600 but I kept blowing head gaskets out of it and eventually just went with the 1600 8v and was much happier with that. Good power and real simple!

would you only change the front shackles or would you the the front and rear shackles? I'm asking because I'm about to put my winch and custom bumper on mine and it weights over hundred pounds

I would add all of the weight to my rig first, then see what i need to do from there.  Then lest the fine tuning begin.

I have a question for you all, i am now looking for a 1.6, I'm not sure if i should go with a 16v or an 8v.  What one would you recommend, I'm looking for as much power as i can get.

It depends on how much work you want to do.  With the 8v you can just swap the block and head, but keep your existing intake and exhaust thereby skipping the computer bit.

The 16v requires a higher pressure fuel pump, but an extra 10hp and responds to modifications a bit more. 

I was leaning towards the 16v, the more power the better 
My buddies 4dr kick has a 16v and it gets it pretty hard, a car loaded down with gear and 2 guys and it pulls the hills with ease, oh and it had some bigger tires on.  That pretty much hooked me right there haha.

but what drone said makes good since too

 8v is simple. is a 16v worth 10hp if it will give u more headaches and more money

but im not sure how to do the swap but would u have to replace that petro clutch you have in it now?

im doing a 1.6 8v swap pretty soon just found a full donor sidekick and ordered the swap parts. be able to tell you the difference from the 1.3 to the 1.6 soon

Hey all has been going good, i have just been driving it breaking everything in. I just hit 500 miles on the lockers, tranny, and T-case.  I just need to drain out out my gear oil and put some fresh in.
Oh i also need to adjust my clutch a little better, i think it feels like it lets out way to far in the clutch throw, anyone else have this going on too?


Ya man let me know how the power difference is between the both.  I talked to a guy that lives in the same city, he has the 2.0L in his sami and it rips!!!

i didnt even know you can adjust the clutch lol mine grabs about 1/4 way off the floor and i like that

when i come back from flordia, im starting the swap then so in about 3 weeks it should be all done

Little bit of an update on what i have done...

Made up a front drive shaft yesterday, cut out my old tranny cross member  then started to install the drive shaft.  That is untill i hit a bit of a snag, the cv is maxed out.  The only spare drive shaft i had laying around was an old 86+ Toyota front drive shaft, they dont have the greatest operating angle.

Going to pull the CV's out tomorrow and clearance them out so i can at least got play in the snow.
For now its just going to be a temporary thing, untill i can round up some more cash to put in to a nice front shaft.

Ill throw some pics up to tomorrow when i get it all buttoned up.

Here's the how too for this "mod".  The guy explains everything pretty well, it was super easy to do and only took about 45 min to an hour.

He uses an angle grinder to do most of his work but it doesn't look that pretty.  I chucked mine up in a lathe and hammered it out pretty quick.

I went from 20° of movement to just under 35°, but I'm still not even sure if that's going to fit.

Ill toss up a pic of my drive line here in a bit, but for now.....got a job interview!

thanks dude. im not there yet if i go any more lift ill need to do it. i was thinking on cutting the t-case mounts so the case sits lower but i have to look at the angle on that driveshaft first.

Got my drive shaft all in, and tested it out...So far i have very little vibrations if any at all.
The drive line angle is sitting at about 22°, i have a little room for axle movement but it doesn't seem like enough.  But the only way I'm going to find out is by using it!

Talked to some people at pirate4x4.com and was told to look for an....
89-94 V6 4Runner rear drive shaft, Non CV and it has a max operating angle of 42°.

Didn't get any pics of my D-line yet, its pretty wet out side and i don't feel like crawling under my rig.

Job interview went pretty much no where, they just told me they have about 40 other people in line waiting he just told me it was a pretty slim chance of finding work during the wet months

wow i didn't know it was that bad out there for jobs. new jersey is slow but you can still find a job if your well qualified.

i picked up my tracker today and i have all the parts except some small stuff for the swap hope it will be done by the end of the month but its getting colder. nice days are getting less and less might have to wait till it starts to get warmer 

Hey all,

Gave my rig a hard shake down run yesterday....
Found a few weak spots with it and now have to get some new parts

Went into a mud hole and smashed into a fresh rut where someone was stuck before.  My rig jump up and when the water and mud settled I was left with this...

Dam them shackles in the front!!

I now have to source down some new YJs to replace this, then think up a way to prevent (without reversing the shackles) this from happening again. 

Oh and here's a pic of my front drive line.

The angles aren't the greatest but there's not vibrations and it hasn't blown apart....yet


Ill have some more stuff coming up as i put it back under the knife.

Just got a new job so i can start putting money into the sami again haha
