50 Dollar Paint Job
« on: July 16, 2009, 09:28:39 PM »
Ok, so it's sort of a lie.  We actually only spent 37 dollars on the Safety Red paint and some primer.  But I figure with the sand paper and the highlight paint it probably came close to 50.   Plenty worth it to make sure the vehicle looked good for the 4th of July parade a couple weeks back.

Some additional shots of the vehicle during prep will be added later.

Papered up with the first coat of paint on.

Left to let the paint dry.

Before and...

After.  Highlights were added to the rocker panels, the bumpers repainted and the wheels given a quick coat of paint.  The SJ-410 logo's were given a quick coat of white paint and stuck back in place.

We even managed to save the Team Trophy Challenge 2007 sticker, as there aren't replacements available.

Since we used the base Safety Red without mixing, and we have a gallon of it and this took a little over a quart, we can re-paint as needed as I scrape paint off.  Before winter we will paint the targa bar and doors along with a new windshield frame with a plexi-glass windshield from Roadless Gear.

Sweet paint job!   ;D

I just painted mine a few days ago as well.  Came out nice I think.

Gotta love cheap paint jobs....although I must confess I sorta cheated, because I used an electric power painter.  ::)

I saw that, I liked the matt finish.  As for cheating, we used an air gun.  So it's pretty even.  :D

Lindenmooch, what did you use for paint?  Type and color name?  I need that color for a boat I just got.

Your tracker looks good.

Well I just went on Walmart.com to try and find it(that's where I bought it)....but I came up with nothing.   I do still have the empty plastic container the paint came in...and I'll get a pic of it for you tomorrow.

However...the color is just a custom one the guy at Walmart made for me.  I told him I wanted OD green...and grabbed something off a shelf that looked like what I wanted....he scanned it in his machine, and the machine mixed my color up pretty nicely.

The type of paint is a latex based, acrylic exterior paint for use on houses and sheds or whatever.   It claimed "extreme adhesion" to nearly any surface.  I ended up with a rough-ish texture on the tracker, because it came out of my paint gun a bit thick.  Overall, I love it.

*UPDATE*

Got those pics of the paint for you.  And a night shot of the Tracker.

Gen-Erix:  We sprayed the primer and the red with a gun then used a brush to put on the highlighting for the rocker protection and the wheels.  I used spray paint (Ultr-Flat Tan from a camouflage set) on the roll cage.
