Standard vehicle names from around the world.
« on: September 16, 2005, 12:05:01 PM »
Hello All,

I was wanting to catagorize and make a list of all of the Suzuki 4x4 and AWD vehicles Suzuki has made since 'the begining'. I have some of the names but was wondering if people could chime in with what they know so we could build a comprehensive list.

Some of this is located on our Tech Spec page so we don't need to cover old ground but update and modernize it instead.

This list will be used in future web designs and services offered.

Thanks for your help. Please add and correct with your knowledge.

-Eric

Old 'J' style Track/Kick/ Vitara is till in production in Spain under the Santana name. It was available in the UK from 1999-2002 in 8V form as the Vitara 4u, then the Vitara 4u2. The diesel van variant was sold in the UK until 2003/4 when it was quietly dropped (not a big seller). The 410 was sold in the UK until around 1988 (BIG seller). Spanish models where known as Santanas ie Suzuki SJ410 Santana, which reflected the fact that they were built by Santana.

Not forgetting the Mazda Proceed Levante about which I know next to nothing but a search on Google shows that both early and late model bodies have been produced

Eric,

Here's an interesting one "Suzuki Farmworker", Now I always thought these were SJ413 flat decks that people just called farmworkers (as this is what most ended up as) until I found this listing here:

Full link to Ad: http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/auction_detail.asp?id=34026635 where it appears that Suzuki did actully make a truck marketed under the "Farmworker" name. Notice the Sammy gaurd flares with the SJ410 grill and the side front indicator is blanked out with a small Suzuki badge and instead the indicator is back where the latter Coil sprung models had it. Also the windscreen is a fold down type with removable roof where as the SJ410 and 413 flat decks were not.

I did think about buying this one as it would be a good run about for me but the 1 lt motor put me off hench why I when for the big block 1.3 in the soft top  ;D

To complete the info...
The Swift was simply called Swift in Europe (not sure about UK though). The Cultus must have been the name for Japan.

The Santana factory in Spain has produced loads of Suzuki 4x4s, of the Samurai, Vitara and Jimny models. (When I say Vitara I meen Sidekick, not Grand Vitara, all GV in Europe come from Japan). The first units were good quality, but over the years, it simply went down. Up to the point that Suzuki has broken relations with Santana, no more to be produced. The Vitara will still be in production, as the Santana 300 and the 350 (3 dr or 5 dr). Its the same Vitara, only produced in an independent factory and with bad quality standards.

About the LJ models, there are some here in Europe (mainy LJ 80 I belive), but I don't know much about them.

89-98 Sidekick (N. America ) | Vitara (World excluding USA) | GEO Tracker (USA)
Pontiac Sunrunner (Canada) | GMC Sidekick? (Canada)

92 - 94 They were called Asuna Sunrunner not Pontiac. GMC Tracker would have been 89 - 91 as the rebadge to Asuna was 92. Asuna's and GMC's were sold through Pontiac dealerships. Pontiac Sunrunner was 95 and 96 I believe but am not entirely sure. There was also the Chevrolet Tracker, 89- 91, then Geo Tracker until the nameplate was dropped. This all took place in Canada ;)

The Geo Tracker became Chevrolet Tracker in 1998.  this included the actual 1998 model. USA models, some made in Canada.

The Swift is a Swift in the UK, the Aerio is a Baleno.
We also get a small van with an SJ410 engine known as The Suzuki Carry, and a small car called the wagon R, both of those are produced with/by Vauxhall/GM. AFAIK they have never stopped production of the Swift
