gas tank lift (done)
« on: June 11, 2005, 02:10:02 PM »
ok, i've cut off the front mounts of my fuel tank already, so there's no turning back.

i've read through Mike's write up over and over, and i have a few questions.

with the front mounting, i know i need to drill a couple of holes, but does the actual tank sit on top of the crossmember, or underneath?

i have that much sorted.

now, how to mount the rear of the tank is the problem. the back of my chassis design is different to the one in mikes article. so how does it fit up?

is there actually enough room for the tank to be lifted over the front and rear cross members so that it sits on top of everything?

i will get pics for you guys.

thanks
Steve

hey yeah i have an '89 aswell and i end up doing mine abit differently, i started by jacking the tank up and wedging it in place (the back coming up and over first)with the holes centred underneath the forward xmember, and found that the holes in the rear were about in line with the front of the xmember so i used some 20mm box section to space it up and inwards (on top of the xmember). and then i just drilled and bolted it all together, in the rear bolting the box section to the xmembr and then the tank to the box etc.. this should give u an good idea, of how it can be done to allow for the fact that the tank wasn't made centred to the xmembrs, well mine wasn't.

thanks subbie, that helps a lot.

well, seeing as i got fed up with trying to fit it up in place, i decided to cut the rear crossmember out, and then weld in another crossmember.

only i havent welded in the new crossmember yet.

i'm still planning on how to best fit it up, and still measuring things up. i plan to fit some eye bolts on the new crossmember for recovery, and so still mocking it up.

i will be using some 50mm x 75mm to start off with, unless thats too big, and i go to 50mm x 50mm.

anyway, i plan to sit the front of the tank on top of the forward crossmember, providing i have enough room above below the body.

thanks again.

cool, thats one way to fix the problem.
you might have trouble fitting on top of the crossmembr,
i have a "3 body and i had to take the blub thing off so it would fit up that high. but yours might be a bit different anyway good luck with it sounds like a fun little project.

On mine I cut off the rear mounts (attached to the bottom of the frame crossmember), fliped them over and mounted them on top of the crossmember after shortning them as much as possible with a grinder, The front mounts were shortned but stayed on the bottom of the crossmember.

This places the tank snug against the body without touching.

well, seeing as i already started a thread on this, i thought i would just up date it.

i have now done the tank lift. yay. just made a new crossmember for the back. lifted the tank about 3". i'm pretty happy with it so far.

i also added a tow hitch mount in the crossmember too, so i can tow from here instead. i will look into some other forms of hooks, or loops for towing/recovery, but i think this will do for now.

there is about 1" left of clearance under the body to the tank, so its still ok.

its late now, and i dont know where my camera is, but i will post pics in the morning.

thanks for the pic Zig. i was originally going to do it the way you have, but i wanted to keep my tow hitch as well.

the old tow hitch would always hit and drag on the ground, so i couldn't keep it.

i managed to put in a tow hitch reciever, and in theory, i should be able to tow trailers when i need to.

here are some pics.

this is what the paint is.

its ok, but it marks easy. not so much as scratch off, but yeah. hard to keep clean, compared to gloss. gloss has too much bling for me.

and cheap degreaser, yay.

i had heaps more, but i chucked the empty cans.
