Best Coil Spring Compressors
« on: August 14, 2011, 10:37:19 AM »
I need to install a set of OME lifted springs and hopefully spacers into a 2001 Chevy Tracker and wondered who makes the best spring compressor?  I see Northen Tool has a $30 set but I want to know if a someone knows about a better unit for a few dollars more.  I plan on using these agian on my next build and using the AutoZone loaners is getting old.

You don't need a compressor for the Tracker springs, unless you have
coil springs on the strut it's self.

Use the vehicle weight and a floor jack to compress and install your
springs or spacers, don't add both to the same location, use the lifted
spring or the stock spring and a spacer

"best"'and harbor freight don't really work in the same sentence. If you only need a specific tool a time or two get the cheapos.(and make sure life insurance policy is current). If you plan on doing many mods buy a quality set.. I have a cheap set and really don't like useing them. And these rigs just don't really need them anyway.

No need at all for a spring compressor with a track/kick suspension lift, The ONLY time you will need a compressor is if you have coilover struts, and the sidekick/trackers do not.

You might check with your local Napa or other auto parts store, a lot of times they have the option to rent or borrow tools.

Now I feel like a puss for asking, I have lowered dozens of cars but this is my second lift.  Should I disconnect sway bar? do I need the huge pry bar? I bought the transfer case align brackets from bits 4 vits and found some OME lifted springs plus the MK1 spacers I was planning on pairing up til know, I am having fitment issues as my rims are too wide and rub fenders, plus I have a 2 inch body lift, any suggestions?

Ya, you can disconnect one side or both just to make it easier to install
your lift, as far as your rubbing problem, what spec of rim are you using?

I was rather concerned about running without the sway bar installed when I did the Altered ego 4.5" suspension lift. But the ride is rather sweet without the sway, far less body roll than I expected, especially compared to a sammi. It is not a canyon carver by any stretch, but a reasonable speed can be maintained with full control.

remove tire
remove shocks
jack chassis so axle would sag (at rear)
remove springs. :)
