Home Paint Job ?
« on: February 25, 2009, 07:06:54 PM »
I haven't ever used a spray gun before and i am kinda intimidated by it . Is it that hard to do a decent paint job ?
What all do I need to get/buy/learn ?

Of maybe I will just buy some spray bombs , anyone painted their track, kick or Sam with rustoleum spray cans ?

Thanks,
Raz

i say go for it.
painting ain't bad. it's the prep work that i hate.
if you follow the paint mixing directions, and have a reasonable gun(and tip) it can come out just fine.
in the past i have painted 3 of my cars- one twice.
did my first one with a little air box compressor/spray gun kit. then i got a real compressor and a binks gun.
'89 kick w/little motor, still got pieces of jeff's pucks, stan's sticks into 4.24:1 tcase, 31x10.5x15's, rear lockrite, kick power steering, some radios(kj6esv), bmw seat, other changes just because. done on the cheap.

Seems like I remember someone at Pirate 4x4 that painted their truck with bedliner spray.

go for it!! then come do mine!!  8)  but really as long as you practice on a surface similar to the prepped and primered surface you should be fine.... what color were you thinking? some colors hide imperfections better than others!  8)

The one on the left looks like it only has adjustment for paint flow..The one on the right appears to have an air adjust on it as well as paint flow.. Either will work, just take your time...

Black will show your imperfections terribly. White(and lighter shades) will tend to hide your imperfections. The guns pictured are meant for spraying high viscosity materials and wont work very well with automotive type finishes. Go to harbor freight and pick up a cheap spray gun that is meant for spraying light weight materials(should be around 40 bucks) and you will get much better results. And don't forget to thin the heck outta the paint. The thinner the better. Thin by the drip test. When you take the paint stick out of the paint after stirring, all the paint should stop dripping off the end of the stick after about 4 seconds. Its not as hard as it seems. The real work lies in the prep work.

I actually heard that white shadows easily and darker colors were easier to not show shadows . I was going to go cheap anyway and bought implement paint at Theisens  . My father inlaw is a retired farmer so , it would be my guess that he used these guns for painting farm machines. What colors are easiest to hide imperfections ? This is going to be a daily driver and offroad machine that I am not going to take to car shows and will have a scratch ,dent, or blemish and I won't fret it.
Tell me if this is not a good idea .
Also , what air pressure should I set the regulator at on the air compressor ? or on the gun with two knobs do you run line pressure and regulate at the gun ?
Thanks So Much,
Raz

www.rustoleum.com

read this Write-up and look at the linked pictures.

http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=2331682&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1

I read the whole thread. Sounds like I might give it a try . Roll it on and trim edges with a brush, and like it says now overspray to deal with .

I am going to take the implement paint back and get the Rustoleum  . Might even change my color from black to something else.  Will about any color besides white or yellow cover the original pink/purple ?

do it!
i have no plans on putting a good paint job on suzi- she only gets paint in little bits and pieces to mabe keep rust away. whatever is laying around mostly. spray cans, brush on, dip or other.
i did use a brush/roller on an old work truck, and the thing was no longer embarassing to run thru town.
used "implement paint"(1 qt white, 1qt black)-black for the wheels and bumpers, then mixed the white in and painted the body. quick cover but long dry(esp. how thick i put it on).
your color is interesting, but the paint still looks good.

I do need to do a little body work on a couple of areas . Doesn't need to be a professional job but look decent. What should I do with each one of these areas ? I know the bondo issue will be the hardest to deal with . Do I have to take all the old bondo out or just spot fill the cracks and fill in the part that has popped out ? The rest of the bondo seems tight .
Just wondering how I prep all these areas before I paint ?
Thanks,
Raz
