Throwing code p0400
« on: April 04, 2008, 05:18:24 PM »
97 16v kick
I know this is an egr code.
Where should I start with replacing items?
Also, I heard sometimes it may not be part failure but sometimes blockage...

Looking for info!!! 8)

I had an issue with the EGR valve on a Chevy 3.4l once.
I just took it apart and saw that it was full of carbon deposits.
I scraped it away as best I could, blew 130PSI air into it and put 'er back together.

Never had an issue with it again.

I have, however, seen them all melted and disfigured, caused by a clogged catalytic converter - but that was a Chrysler - yech.  :-\

A while back, I had this problem, pulled it apart and cleaned it... Throwing the same code now so thinking it is time to replace stuff... I can take a look at it again...

Are you having power issues?

If so, I would definitely check the cat. If you don't have e-check in your area, I'd send a rod up through it and "clean" it out! Or put in a test pipe.  C'mon, how much emmissions can a 1.6 put out, right? :)

...Then see what you get and perhaps replace the EGR. I'd hate to replace it and burn it up again if the cat's clogged.

If you cleaned it and it's doing it again, there must be another reason.

Esually just need to clean the EGR elbow at the plenium.  The Exh gas hitting the clod intake air condenses the deposits out and gum up that elbow.  I cleaned mine with a long screwdriver and coat  hanger accesssing it thru the open butterfly of the throttle.

Well, I got into it and scrubbed every bit of the gunk out... I put it all back together and no check engine light!!! The sensor looked gummed up, so that got cleaned as well. We will see how long it stays this way...

Strange enough the actual low flow sensor doesn't even check the flow.

It just commands the EGR Wide Open and looks for a pressure drop at the MAP.  If I could make the signal to command the EGR WO, command a vacuum switching valve to drop MAP vacuum (maybe thru an aquarium air metering screw, then it should satisfy the sensor for EGR P0400...

Yep I had to get waist deep to fix mine.  Even drove around with a vacuum gauge duc taped to the outside of the windshield so i could watch the EGR function.

I also had a friend recomend a gun cleaning kit with the brushes and bore solvent.
