samurai overheating/what in the world is going on?
« on: October 02, 2006, 04:00:02 PM »
87 Samurai. Stock with a weber

I have been having this overheating problem. I changed the thermostat and fluid + have a new radiator. I can't find a leak and see no white smoke of water vapor coming out the tail pipe.

i keep adding coolant and it keeps disappearing. the vehicle warms up and then goes into the high, and then back down(usually). When it cools off, I add more fluid and drive again. Pretty much the same thing.

I'm thinking that I have a headgasket going. As well, I think the water pump may only be working when it damn well feels like. Maybe the thermostat opens so late that it vaporizes the coolant? Do I try running without a thermostat? Should the water pump be noticibly cycling even when you just start up cold?

Anybody else go thru this.

What in the world is going on?

I just had the same problem that you do, tried the same fixes you did... I didn't get to the water pump, the engine started putting out lots of white smoke... so I replaced it with a 1.6 that didn't leak!!!

is there any extra coolant in the overflow?  my cap went bad and poored water into the overflow.  saddly the new cap didn't fix it all the way,  i still have to fill up after long drives
i just like dents, i don't know why.

pull your spark plugs, borrow a radiator pump (shucks and other places will loan them to you)and pump it up to about 16 lbs and watch the meter to see if the pressure goes down, if so a head gasket or a cracked head could be your prob, turn the engine over a few times and replace the plugs.

Yes check oil for coolant, but did your thermostate have a vent in it? if so it needs to facing towards radiator or motor will overheat.  I did this and it drove me crazy finding the issue. but still check for oil in coolant, and coolant in oil.  could be a bad head gasket, although with no smoke you could be looking at something simple.

just remember to get the FI intake with the new engine, running a 1.3 intake with carb doesn't do much for a 1.6
