I think it has to come out - it's not as simple as removing & replacing the shifter - there is a detent ball that needs to be removed to allow the shift rods to move independently and I could be wrong, but I think the case has to come out to get that ball out.

Yep, I know about the detent was wondering if I can just pull the back half of t/c off while still in vehicle? Not a big deal either way just was trying to save some unneeded work. Thanks for the reply.

If I remember right I had to split the case is half, pull the shift forks out etc to get the ball out. I was doing a 4 to 1 gear swap at the same time and this was like 4 years ago. I would suggest you remove it and download some instructions on a 4 to 1 gear swap. Plus you can clean it up at the same time.if you have the cash buy the gears cause now is the time to install them.

You'll need to remove the interlock ball between the shift rails, #4 in the diagram.

Not to be confused with the 2WD/4WD detent ball, #2 or the H-N-L detent ball, #6.

Edit: BTW, this is the Samurai transfer case, not exactly what you asked for, but all that I've got.

Pull the case, there is only 1 bolt that is hard to get, and it's at the top
of the case, under the trans shift casting, leave it out when you put
the case back in.

You need to use a pin punch to get the shifter ball socket on the high/low
shaft off, and there are pins and springs in the shifter housing (t-case) that
need to be removed, as well as the tail section needs to come off to remove
the high/low shaft to remove the interlock ball.

This all sounds complicated, it really isn't but to do this in the truck would be
a PITA and you will end up removing it anyway, save the trouble and do it
first round

Yup, I've been told by all sources that the case must be split to get it out.

You'll need to remove the interlock ball between the shift rails, #4 in the diagram.

Not to be confused with the 2WD/4WD detent ball, #2 or the H-N-L detent ball, #6.

Anyone know what gear the transfer case is in, in this illustration?  Would this position of the shift rails be 2HI?

Yes, that is 2 high, see the notch in the top shaft? that is what lets
the low range shaft move position to low range

The top shaft is the 2wd-4wd shaft, the bottom is the high-low

This thread was always about a Sidekick T-case, Merlin posted the pic,
and it looks close enough to be sidekick anyway, the basic info of what
needs to be done is in this thread, so I really don't see a problem with it
